PDB Editor (“the App”)

This Privacy Policy describes how PDB Editor handles information when you use the App. If you do not agree with this policy, please do not use the App.

Who we are

PDB Editor is published by Los Palmos LLC, a Pennsylvania limited liability company (“Los Palmos,” “we,” “us”). For privacy questions, contact us at admin@lospalmos.org.

Summary

PDB Editor is designed to work primarily on your device. The App does not require you to create an account. We do not sell your personal information. The App’s only network request downloads a structure file from the RCSB Protein Data Bank when you enter a PDB ID; nothing about you is sent. The App may use the camera or photo library only when you choose those features, and store a small amount of data locally on your device (such as favorites).

Information the App processes

Structure files (PDB). When you open a file from your device or enter a public identifier (for example, a PDB ID), the App loads and displays that data on your device. If you enter a PDB ID, the App downloads the corresponding structure file from the RCSB Protein Data Bank (see “Network and third-party services” below).
Favorites. If you save favorites, those entries are stored locally on your device (for example, using on-device storage such as UserDefaults). They are not transmitted to us by the App.
Camera. If you enable features that use the camera (such as a live camera background), video from the camera is used on your device to render the experience. The App does not upload your camera feed to our servers (we do not operate account-based servers for this App).
Photos library. If you choose an image from your photo library (for example, as a background), the App uses that image on your device. It is not uploaded to us by the App.
No analytics, ads, or third-party code. The App contains no third-party code and no analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting tools. If you have chosen in your device settings to share analytics or crash data with Apple and app developers, Apple may collect crash and diagnostic information and make it available to us in aggregated or de-identified form under Apple’s policies and your device settings.

Network and third-party services

The App makes only one kind of network request: when you type in a PDB ID, it downloads that protein structure from the RCSB Protein Data Bank (files.rcsb.org). The request contains only the structure ID you entered; the App sends no information about you. As with any internet request, the RCSB servers can see your device’s IP address and standard request information (such as the time of the request), which they handle under their own policies, outside our control.

How we use information

Information processed by the App is used only to provide App functionality on your device: displaying molecular structures, optional backgrounds, animations, and exports you initiate (PDB files, animated GIFs, and videos). Exported files are saved or shared only where you choose.

Data retention and deletion

Data stored locally on your device remains until you remove it (for example, by clearing App data, deleting favorites within the App, or uninstalling the App). Uninstalling the App typically removes locally stored App data from your device, subject to how your operating system manages app data.

Children’s privacy

The App is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information in a way that concerns you, contact us using the information below.

Your choices

You can deny or revoke camera or photo access in iOS Settings for PDB Editor.
You can avoid network downloads by not entering PDB IDs and by opening only local files you supply.

International users

If you use the App outside your home country, your information may be processed in the country where your device is located and, when you download structures by PDB ID, by the RCSB Protein Data Bank in accordance with their policies.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the App after changes means you accept the updated policy.
